Alexander and Bonin is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new work by Willie Doherty. The exhibition, extracts from a file, is a group of 40 black-and-white photographs taken at night in Berlin during the artist’s year-long residency with the Berlin Artist Program of the DAAD.
Willie Doherty’s photographs of nocturnal lights from apartment buildings, subway or garage entrances leave the impression of activity just transpired or on the verge of taking place. Shot from a parked car, these photographs provide the viewpoint of the anonymous observer. Simple in structure and smaller in scale than his earlier cibachromes, this body of work is the first to be shot outside of Northern Ireland and marks a return to his use of black-and-white film. The group of 40 photographs is divided into 8 individual works: each photograph measures 18 x 24 inches and is mounted on aluminum.
Willie Doherty lives and works in Derry, Northern Ireland. He has exhibited extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe and North America. In 1999 his work was the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Renaissance Society, Chicago and his four-screen video installation, Somewhere Else, was shown in the Carnegie International, Pittsburgh. In 2001, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin will organize a survey exhibition that will travel in Europe and North America.
