DATES: December 10, 1998 - January 30, 1999

LOCATION: 132 Tenth Avenue between 18th and 19th Streets

HOURS: Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 6 pm

From December 10th through the 30th of January 1999, Alexander and Bonin will exhibit photographs by five gallery artists: Matthew Benedict, Willie Cole, Willie Doherty, Mona Hatoum and Rita McBride.

Matthew Benedict's photographs have often functioned as exploratory studies for his paintings. Several of his subjects will be represented in this show: the Pirate Blackbeard, Saints and a fictional detective of the 1920 and 1930s. Born in 1968 in Rockville Connecticut, Benedict is known for his work in several different formats: embroidery, object pieces and painting.

Willie Cole will present a new series of photographs of an altered lawn jockey, an image that he has previously presented in sculptural form. The photographs are part of his ongoing investigation into this symbol of pre-civil rights America as signified by Elegba, the Yoruba god of thresholds and choices. Willie Cole recently had one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama.

Willie Doherty lives and works in Derry, Northern Ireland. He will exhibit two photographs from a new body of work, Contemplating the Consequences of Political Failure. All of these new works are diptychs taken from videos of the same mise en scène. During the past year, Willie Doherty had a one-person exhibition at the Tate Gallery, Liverpool. In 1999 he will exhibit at Alexander and Bonin and the Renaissance Society, Chicago.

Mona Hatoum will show work from a series of photographs taken of animals in cities such as Vienna, Paris and Jerusalem, many of which present patterns and motifs similar to those she has explored sculpturally. Some of these images were included in her recent traveling survey exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. In 1999 Mona Hatoum will be a resident at ArtPace in San Antonio, Texas and will exhibit at Castello di Rivara, Italy and at Alexander and Bonin.

Rita McBride’s large scale photographs of buildings are taken and cropped in such a way as to both disorient the viewer and illuminate the ideas behind her sculpture. In 1999, McBride, the recent recipient of a DAAD grant, will have one-person shows at the Kunstverein Munich, and the Mai 36 and Annemarie Verna galleries in Zürich.
