This will be Salcedo’s first New York exhibition since her 1998 solo show at the New Museum of Contemporary Art. Tenebrae: Noviembre 7, 1985 is a lead and steel sculpture in thirteen parts which occupies a room measuring 15 x 17 feet. Thirteen chairs with elongated legs extending horizontally across the room create an area of chaos where ground, body and architecture collide. The sculpture marks out a space of exclusion and the viewer is placed on the threshold between the site and everyday life. Doris Salcedo was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1958. She received her MA at New York University and has taught at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Cali and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Bogotá. In 1995 she was the recipient of a Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation grant. In 1999 the three sculptures in the series, Unland, were the subject of one-person exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Gallery, London. Her work was also included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate Modern, London and the Liverpool Biennial of Contemporary Art. Phaidon Press will publish a monograph on her work in November, 2000.
